Red Lobster

Ryan
Typically on our food blog, we’ve reviewed restaurants that are unique to our area and not chain restaurants, but this time we made a special exception! A few months ago, Red Lobster’s headquarters found our blog and asked us to go check out the Bloomington location (on the house!) as there have been a number of big changes, including a head chef who chooses the daily menu. This makes each Red Lobster location a lot more independent. I had to turn the offer down as we were heading to Niagara Falls during the grand opening, but Erica from Red Lobster HQ in Orlando offered us the chance to go back during Endless Shrimp Fest to do our review.

Red Lobster has always been more than just a chain restaurant to me. Our family went there when I was about to turn 6 in 1988 in Sioux Falls, and I remember very distinctly folding up the kids menu into one of those finger crab things. More specifically, Endless Shrimp Fest at Red Lobster has long been one of my favorite restaurant promos. In 2006, a group of us went to this same Bloomington location and I managed to eat 88 shrimp in various forms! In 2008, Lauren and I went to the Golden Valley location and I disappointed by eating barely half that number. Friday night, Lauren, Jason, and I were back in Bloomington for more shrimp. I had hoped to accomplish two things—eat a ton of shrimp while at the same time really enjoying my meal and not stuff myself to the point where the belt was being unbuckled.

Lauren and I hung out at the bar for about an hour before Jason arrived, where we had a comfortable spot to have a couple of drinks and watch the Twins game. Eventually we were seated and soon Jason arrived. It didn’t take us long to decide what to order, though Lauren opted for something other than the shrimp promo. Along with my endless shrimp, I chose the mashed potatoes and garden salad as sides.

There were five varieties of shrimp to choose from, and I intended to have them all, so I started at the top with the traditional Hand-Breaded Shrimp and also a serving of the Shrimp Linguine Alfredo, because as the heaviest and most filling of the varieties, I wanted to make sure I had room for it! The food took very little time to arrive, and I dug in. The hand-breaded was the basic, safe shrimp choice—simple but delicious, especially when dipped in the cocktail sauce. The linguine dish included a large number of tiny shrimp. It really was satisfying and I wish I could have a second helping of this.

The waiter was very prompt in coming back to take our “refill orders.” As soon as one plate of shrimp was delivered, a new order was immediately sent to the kitchen, creating zero wait time in between plates. My third plate was the Garlic Shrimp Scampi, which although equally tasty was smaller pieces. The waiter told us a man and woman came in recently and between them ordered 32 plates of scampi alone, which at first I thought was insane but later was able to believe it. The scampi is the only dish where that would be a plausible story.

Next I ordered the Garlic Grilled Shrimp, which came ten to a skewer. At this point I might have forgotten to actually taste and savor my food, and instead just wolfed it down, not paying attention to whether or not there was a noticeable difference between this and the Garlic Shrimp Scampi. After eating this portion, I began to get full very quickly. But there was one left to try, the new Parmesan Shrimp, which came in a shallow bowl with some seasonings and toppings. I agreed that this was equally tasty, and decided to call it a night. But the waiter announced to me that there was one more shrimp not on the menu that I could try—the Coconut Shrimp. When dipped in a sweet white sauce, the Coconut Shrimp cracked my top 3. But I was beginning to get light-headed and opted to not kill myself on this particular night by forcing myself to finish this dish.

Overall, I decided the Shrimp Linguine Alfredo was my favorite, but all six were very good and I would order any of them again. As usual, I simply overate and went home feeling bloated. Red Lobster remains one of my favorites, and is still the most reasonably priced sit-down delicious seafood restaurant in my book! Even as often as we eat out, Red Lobster still maintains the “special occasion” type of feel and is one of the few places I excitedly make plans to visit annually.

I admit that I was a bit skeptical when Ryan told me that Red Lobster wanted to give us & two readers gift cards. One because we really started this blog to focus on small, locally owned restaurants and two, because I knew about the FTC’s rules about compensation and new media and I was worried that I would accidentally run afoul of the law. However, I was swayed when we learned that they were taking strides to become fresher and more locally relevant, with each restaurant updating its menu constantly with what fresh fish they had in-house. Also, I was excited to share the love and give away gift cards to two of our loyal readers!

Like Ryan, Red Lobster was a fancier place for my family to go when I was young. I wasn’t very adventurous, though, and would only get the popcorn shrimp. Things have changed! I always remember being half terrified by, and half amazed by, the tank of live lobsters (which I honestly thought were called “monsters”) at the front of every restaurant.

Anyway, on a recent Friday Ryan and I asked Jason to meet us at Red Lobster. He had to work late so Ryan and I killed a bit of time at the bar, where the bartender was kind enough to switch the television to the Twins game. However, when I ordered a beer and a glass of water, the bartender only gave me the beer. The bar area was quite busy between people waiting for their tables, like us, and servers making drink orders for people sitting in the dining room. I didn’t get my water until twenty minutes later, when he asked me if I wanted another beer and I reminded him. Regular readers around here know how much I HATE IT when servers or bartenders forget my water or don’t fill it up. I am just an extremely thirsty person and I need a lot of water! So that unfortunately got the night off on the wrong foot.

Ryan was going to get Endless Shrimp from the get-go, but the all-you-can-eat thing has never been my preference, so I went for one of the specials off of their new Wood-Grilled menu, which was a wood-grilled lobster tail, wood-grilled skewer of shrimp, and shrimp scampi, along with salad and a side. Attempting to be healthy (really just justifying to myself eating TWO of the awesome cheddar-garlic biscuits) I got the broccoli for my side.

Shrimp, shrimp and lobster

My lobster was delicious – everything was delicious, but lobster is such a rare treat for me. I really could taste the smoke of the grilling which gave it a very nice dimension. The grilled shrimps were very succulent and the scampi delicious, of course, how could butter and garlic with shrimp not be tasty?

Overall I very much enjoyed our visit to Red Lobster, after I finally got my glass of water. I am sure that we will be back again next time Endless Shrimp Fest is on!

My son and I love Red Lobster. He loves the crab legs and I love the endless shrimp. Because of the economy we haven’t been able to go this time for the endless shrimp but we love them anyway. (when will they have endless crab legs? My son would be in heaven if they did. LoL)

  17. Kathy Purvis September 30, 2010 at 7:55 pm #

I am not a seafood lover but my husband is. I do however love the biscuits so I “sacrifice” and go with him whenever he wishes. He ate the endless shrimp and I thought he was going to pop before he stopped. I ordered the New York Strip Steak and it was better than any that I have ever ordered from a “steak” restaurant. Red Lobster has something for everyone. Thanks.

  18. Ashley Keller September 30, 2010 at 7:57 pm #

I love Red lobster. The new parmesan shrimp is to die for. I also love the resturant in general. I have a 3yr old with Autism and they are always so accomendating no matter where we go, so we can enjoy a dinner or lunch out just like everyone else.

  19. Lenae Brandt September 30, 2010 at 8:01 pm #

  20. Melanie Baugher September 30, 2010 at 8:04 pm #

The endless shrimp is always what my friends and I wait for! During that time we will go to Red Lobster several times, even though the closest one is over 30 miles away. The new Garlic Parmesean shrimp is WONDERFUL. I had 2 orders of that last Friday, and will be going back tomorrow night with another group of friends, and that is the first thing I will order. I also love the popcorn shrimp.

Red Lobster is a long time favorite for our family, even for our daughter who doesn’t like fish.

  22. Valerie Spickler September 30, 2010 at 8:15 pm #

Love, love, love Red Lobster. Ate there with my husband and two very special friends for our 15th Anniversary. Of course had to have endless shrimp. I think the wood grilled are my favorite, but the terriaki they had last time was a little better. Wish they would bring those back. Love all the shrimp and everything I get at Red Lobster.

Will definitely be back soon, as I just got another coupon!! Can’t go wrong with endless shrimp and a coupon.

  23. Kathleen Zangel September 30, 2010 at 8:15 pm #

I love RL. It is my favorite place to eat. My sister and I go there at least once a month. The service is great, and I just love the crab and lobster trio when they offered. I ask Santa for a gift card every year. Even my Boss gives me one as a gift. I wish I was rich so I could go at least once a week, or even buy my own RL….LOL.
Thanks Red Lobster for having a nice place to dine out at. Your loyal customer, Kathleen.

  24. Laura Jacobs September 30, 2010 at 8:17 pm #

A friend of mine introduced me to Red Lobster about 14-15 years ago and I have been in love with that place ever since!! 😀

It is kinda rotten though, because I don’t have one in my town, but the closest one is only about 35-40 mins away so it’s not *that* far to go…

My husband and I always go for endless shrimp. He really loved the Parmesan shrimp (I did too!) and my favorite is the Scampi… but I also start out with a Scampi and the Shrimp Linguine Alfredo, which is a close 2nd.

My husband’s birthday is September 19th so we always go for his bday and our wedding anniversary is October 16th (we got married in 2009) so we will go again for that!

When we went for his bday, we had 150 shrimp between the 2 of us (not including the shrimp on my salad lol) We always have such great service there too! 😀 😉

  25. Rebecca Scott September 30, 2010 at 8:19 pm #

I love Red Lobster! Sometimes the food at the one we go to Chillicothe, Ohio leaves a little to be desired … Overall it’s usally a good meal! (And it’s tied to childhood memories for me too!)

  26. N Lootens September 30, 2010 at 8:31 pm #

I love going to Red Lobster. Everything is just so yummy (the pasta, chicken, lobster, shrimp, mmm…). Last time I went there, it was during the Endless Shrimp. Needless to say, I ate a few too many and had to take the rest home for later. 🙂 It’s definitely a great place to dine at whether for a group outing with friends or with family for a special occasion.

I have absolutely been in love with red lobster since I was a little girl! I can remember going every Sunday after church with my family. Red lobster is a reason I love seafood to this day. As an adult my taste for their food has stayed the same still… I love love love their ultimate feast but their all you can eat shrimp is excellent as well… Especially the scampi. Very impressed with red lobster even after all these years, they are definitely my favorite restaurant!

    I haven’t been in months.
I had a lot of rewards points through a credit card at one time. I ended up getting 5-$25 gift cards for Red Lobster!! That’s how much I love Red Lobster. They’re all gone now, I used them sparingly though.

Red Lobster is a family favorite! My 14 yr old daughter has texture issues with food and always has, so I never expected her to like seafood. She tried crab legs and shrimp and asks for those two items all the time. We go to Red Lobster for her birthday every year and she constantly tells my husband and I that Red Lobster is where we want to spend our birthday dinners as well. We always oblige her as we all love Red Lobster too!!

I don’t venture outside very often but Red lobster is one of the restaurants i do go out to eat at. I am not a big seafood fan other than shrimp. But I always get their steak and walts shrimp and love it. Their fries are good as well and their biscuits are the best I ever had. It’s one of those meals i look forward to every year and I have never had a bad meal or service there. I recently tried their chicken tenders as well and they are excellent as well as their honey mustard sauce. We generally go there for birthdays as a nice treat.

For a year after I gave birth I had no desire to visit Red Lobster= sad husband! FINALLY, and THANKFULLY those feelings went away, and we haven’t stopped eating there since! WE LOVE RED LOBSTER! Just there last weekend for Endless Shrimp!! 🙂

I first found out about Red Lobster back in the late 70’s when I went out west to visit a high school friend. I was taken to Red Lobster and thought I had died and gone to heaven. The closest RL is about 45 miles away. I LOVE endless shrimp. I hope I can get there before endless shrimp is over. They use to have a crispy fish on the menu. We really liked that also plus the cheddar bay biscuits are heavenly also. This next time I go I want to try one of the other shrimp dishes. Plus the tarter sauce is to die for . I HAVE NEVER HAD A BAD MEAL SERVED TO ME. NO LIE!!!! The wait staff was very friendly and willing to make our dining experience the best. My husband was in the resturant business as a cook and he really pays attention to detail. Hope someday we can have one in our town. Keep up the good work.

  55. Cheryl October 1, 2010 at 1:22 am #

I love Red Lobster and always do their Endless Shrimp for my birthday at the end of October! My favorite was the coconut shrimp bites, but I don’t think they have it this year. I also like the shrimp scampi. I wish I could afford to have the lobster, as everything I have ever had there is WONDERFUL! 🙂

  56. Robin October 1, 2010 at 2:06 am #

I’m glad they enjoyed their experience… I went to the one in Milpitas CA last week and was very disappointed. Some was overcooked, some undercooked, some too salty and everything was very slow.

Also at the end of the season we take our wives out to dinner (red lobster) with our mileage checks that we pooled throughout the season. Brenda the waitress we usually get, Takes care of us just wonderfully.

    p.s. my best, ….. 150 shrimp scampi…. ahhhhh
    i was hungry that night….

I had never been to Red Lobster until I started dating my now fiance about 3 years ago. Every year he counts down the days until shrimp fest. He absolutely loves sea food. Shrimp fest lands during his dad and my birthdays, so we always go to Red Lobster for our birthdays, it usually ends the week before his birthday. So he can get his shrimp fill, we usually go at least once a week or every other week. We have been 3 times already this year! I am excited to go this next time as I’ve heard alot of good things about the Linguine Alfredo. The closest Red Lobster to us is about an hour away so we always make the trip worth our driving distance so he always fills his belly full!

  61. Tracey Moreland October 1, 2010 at 4:00 pm #

We love red lobster! When one of us has a birthday and are asked where we want to go the respomse is always the same, RED LOBSTER!!!

  62. Laura October 1, 2010 at 4:39 pm #

I love Red Lobster 🙂 especially the cheddar biscuits. I love taking a few extra home with the doggy bag. Although it’s hard to find people in my area and age who enjoy seafood. A lot of people think it’s gross.

But the last time me and my brother got our tax refunds we went straight to Red Lobster with them dropping somewhere around a 80 dollar bill on LOBSTER. Well worth it. We were stuffed and happy 🙂

Unfortunately Red Lobster’s prices are a little out of budget for a starving artist like myself. I haven’t gone since then. Boo 😦

  63. Del October 1, 2010 at 7:11 pm #

My wife and I dine at Red Lobster every 2 months or so. Like Ryan I to have dined at the Bloomington location but usually visit the Burnsville MN location as this is closer for us. We missed Crabfest but usually always make it for Endless Shrimp. The Shrimp LInguine is my favorite outside if shrimpfest as leftovers from regular order make a great meal the next day. Looking forward to trying the Parmesan Shrimp. The Coconut is not one of my favorites, but that’s just me. THe rest are excellent.

I have been going to Red Lobster since the early 80’s even though at that time we had to drive from SE Mn. to the citys .
It became a place to go for birthdays and any thing else. Now I go just to go. Nothing special has to be happening. Its a place to get a wonderful meal, great servers, and management .
St.Cloud is close so go there more often but love the one on hwy 94 and the one in Golden Valley also where Iv eaten alot.
This is the week I plan to go for shrimp and hope when I get to my sons home in Kansas that we will hit the one there also. His treat !
Red Lobster has the best management and is the best among corporate restraunts. Good training and policys make it the place to go for the best in food and service

My fiance and I have always made an effort to visit Red Lobster (or the Lob as we call it) at least once during endless shrimp, without fail. But now since she’s pregnant (8mos), I’m thinking it’s time for the final stretch to be laden with shrimp scampi. Of course the thought did cross my head that we’re filling three bellies for the price of two! 😀

Red Lobster was always the place to go for a special meal. My kids and husband still give me gift cards for holidays and take me there for my birthday and mother’s day dinners. It was considered fine dining for our family. The whole clan (inlaws as well) used to meet there for a big family outing. I hope it never goes away. Seafood even in Florida is best at Red Lobster.
